OOTD: new haircut

With the sun finally hitting the UK, I decided my long hair of previous was getting too unmanageable, and thus, in trimming it, I've gone from Alicia Vikander in The Light Between Oceans length to Jessica Chastain in Miss Sloane length! And, in keeping consistent with the Chastain look, I've duly painted my nails black, like Liz Sloane had!

The Marietta dress is now  the third dress from Hobbs I own (the other two: un et deux). Their dresses are perfect for the kind of aesthetic I'm going for at work: elegant and demure.

I find clothes definitely help with the 'fake it 'til you make it' mentality, by which I mean, even if I'm in a sub-optimal mood, if I'm at least sharply dressed at work, I feel better about myself. This then helps to improve my frame of mind, and how I carry out my work.

Mark Twain absolutely nailed it when he said 'clothes make the man'.

Film review: JEZEBEL (William Wyler, 1938)

Julie Morrison (Bette Davis), a headstrong young woman from New Orleans enjoys toying with the cloistering conventions of the time and is used to getting her way. So when he fiancée Pres (Henry Fonda) rainchecks a date because he’s held up at work, she decides to teach him a lesson.

I won one month's access to an app that allows me to read various magazines on my phone from McDonald's Monopoly, which has provided a satisfactory companion for my commutes.

I was browsing one of the magazines when I saw this quote from ScarJo:

Saying we need to support other women sounds very nice in principle but I didn't see her doing as much when she stole a role from an east Asian for Ghost in the Shell. GitS underperforming at the US Box Office is apt karma for such brazen whitewashing, if you ask me.

I am so sick of:

a) Hollywood actresses stealing roles from east Asian actresses who struggle with visibility in film enough as it is (ScarJo, Emma Stone, Tilda Swinton), and 

b) white feminists who purport to care about equal rights for women, when all they care about is equal rights for themselves (Jennifer Lawrence, ScarJo, Emma Stone, Emma Watson, Chloë Grace Moretz, Lena Dunham, Amy Schumer, the list is endless). 

These women would trample over women of colour in a heartbeat if it meant progressing their own (already thriving) careers, yet still want the crown of being ~all inclusive~.

Fuck that.

Review: Next warm handle snowflake and reindeer tights

This week, I cracked out these tights which I got in the sales earlier this year, and seeing as I haven't reviewed any hosiery products for over two years, I thought I'd share some brief thoughts on them!

Product Review: Next Just Pink Eye Collection.

Compactly presented and with a sleek heart-shaped-mirror, the Next Just Pink Eye Collection would be a wonderful invention, the perfect size for dainty handbags. If only all the components themselves were up to scratch.

On the upside, the eyeshadows themselves are great. A soft consistency means I can rub the required amount onto the nib of my finger and apply as much/little as I want. The three colours are a good contrast - I tend to use the middle one more than the other two, and whilst they wouldn’t suffice if you were trying to create a BOLD look, in terms of subtle amounts of make up, it does the job.

Sadly, the two little tubes, of eyeliner and mascara, are a bit of a nightmare. The mascara is a cakey, crumbly mess that is far more likely to make you resemble a sad panda than elongate your eyelashes. And the eyeliner simply doesn’t work; there’s no fluidity to the them, and it clings stubbornly to one part of your eye. So don’t act like I never told you - rely on these two items and you will run into disaster.

However, for the cuteness of the mirror and the effectiveness of the eyeshadow (as well as the fact that the product was a Christmas present), I won’t be too harsh in my grade ;)
