What are the musical references in Ernest Tomlinson's Fantasia on Auld Lang Syne?!
This is a beautiful, whimsical and very busy piece of music which apparently references 152 works. All I can spot are a few!
- Beethoven’s Ode to Joy
- Chopin's Marche funèbre
- Schubert's Trout quintet
- Bach's Wohl mir, dass ich Jesum habe
- Adagio from Spartacus
- Haydn’s Surprise Symphony
- Tchaikovsky's Swan Lake
- "This Old Man" - nursery rhyme
- O Come All Ye Faithful
- The Can Can
Care to have a listen and see if you recognise any of the references?

I don't know if you've listed it already and I don't know what it's called but at the 6 minute mark it's the piece they used in the film with "your Timmy" when he has his it's a wonderful life moment in The Hudsucker Proxy.
Seeing as you love that film, you've probably got it.
lol, that is one of the few that I did spot! :p Adagio from Spartacus. And yes, I remember it because of The Hudsucker Proxy too! God, I love Tim Robbins & the Coen brothers.
hahaha i remember "this old man he played two, he played knick knack" lol childhood memories!

That was from memory and nowhere near 152...lol..It's Shawn. :o)
Well thank you very much Shawn, your music knowledge is excellent. :)
I've been working on and off tracking down the references in this piece. I've got about 70 so far including a handful of pieces which are quoted twice, and I reckon I'm missing 40 or so - I'm not convinced that figure of 152 is quite correct. Quite a few of those 40 are pieces I recognize but can't recall the names of, so I'm fairly sure I've got the number about right. Then again, maybe I've missed some.
I would post the list of ones I've got, but I'd prefer to wait until it's a bit more complete. Quite a few of the ones I'm missing are waltzes, so I'm listening to a lot of Strauss and Tchaikovsky at the moment :)
Dear Robin, thank you so much for your comment! greatly appreciated. Glad someone else is as into this track as I am!
Don't forget Cesar Franck's Symphonic Variations and Bach's Ricercare a 6 from The Musical Offering.
Thank you so much Lang!
Emma, over the festive period (if you can wait that long) try Fantasia on Christmas Carols performed by the Boston Pops Orchestra. Now that's a must over Crimbo!
