the Gyllenhaals:
ReplyDeleteGyll-en-hall.
My personal favourite...Ioan Gruffudd.

You can't not have him!
Noted and added!
ReplyDeleteAnd Cilian murphy? I'm getting way too into this..
ReplyDeleteRalph Fiennes! Ralph Fiennes!
ReplyDeleteWow, I had no idea that you pronounced Gruffudd like Griffith.
ReplyDeleteAnd yes, way too many people mispronounce Ralph Fiennes' name.
Scarlett Johansson - it's Scarlett Yo-hansson.
ReplyDelete"Joaquin" is actually pronounced more like "Hwakeen", if my understanding of phonetics is correct, which it probably isn't.
ReplyDeleteI remember having some fun times trying to explain to various foreign friends at university why Sean Bean was pronounced "Shawn Been" and not either "Shawn Bawn" or "Seen Been". I'm not sure it ever really made sense to anyone.
In other news, I'm moving to a flat of my own in December!
Aishwarya Rai, Charlize Theron, Eva (Evah or EEva?) Green, Ewan McGregor, Gael Garcia Bernal, Jonathan Rhys-Meyers (Rees-meyers), Rebecca Romjin (haha), and... that's all I can think of.
ReplyDeleteThank you very much everyone, there's a couple there I didn't know!
ReplyDeleteCongrats Paul, btw. What's the flat like?
I love the name Hwah-keen (and the whole package that goes with it). Isn't it just really pretty....Joaquin...
ReplyDeleteSaoirse is very pretty too, i love Gaelic names.
What about directors, like Guillermo Del Toro (Gee-err-mo)
Pretty much any Irish name.
ReplyDeleteCheckout http://inogolo.com/ for pronunciations of many mispronounced names.
ReplyDeletegerard butler. I'm not sure how it is pronounced but I know it is not the way we Americans say it. It might be a harder G or something.
ReplyDeleteAlso Marion Cotillard.
ReplyDeletePronounced "Ko-ti-ya"
And what is the correct pronunciation of Aishwarya Rai? I never know.
Saoirse is supposed to be pronounced "Seer-sha", but Saoirse Ronan pronounces it as "Sur-sha"
ReplyDeleteCharlize Theron!! I think everyone I know mispronouces her name.
ReplyDeleteIt's "Char-lease" (L is slightly silent) "Tron" (roll the R slightly on both names).
At least that how it's properly pronounced the South African way. :)
Cheers
