All I seem to be listening to these days is Kanye West and M.I.A.

So, I thought I'd branch out the bands and artists that I listened to. Recommend me any musicians you like that you don't think I've heard much of, and I shall try to listen to as much of their music as possible and report back.

(This is also so I can fill all 80 Gb on my iPod and preserve my sanity on my three week long holiday in China sans iPod.)

Try Red Light Company - good band that nobody seems to have heard of (they're on Spotify). Am listening to a lot of Dire Straits recently. Pink Floyd - The Wall and Dark Side of the Moon are must haves in my opinion. American Gangster by Jay-Z is a top album by one of the best rappers out there. Maybe some Led Zeppelin? Since I Left You by the Avalanches. A little eclectic, but to me it sounds like a recipe to success!

ummm, joshua radin is probably my favourite. a fine frenzy, coconut records, death cab for cutie, jason mraz, ludovicio einaudi, nickelback is quite old school but still quite cool, try some switchfoot too.

"preserve my sanity on my three week long holiday in China sans iPod."

I understand that iPods are portable these days, so why not take it with you?

Emma said...

Whoops, my mistake, it's meant to say "sans laptop".

J.D. said...

Aren't, um, laptops portable too? Or am I missing the point again...

Emma said...

True, but my mum is being ultra-mean to me and she suspects I'm addicted to the internet (oh, rly?) and is trying to get me to kick the habit. :(

J.D. said...

Ew, that's über-gross. The real world really is overrated, I don't get how some people can't get that.

Your mother = evil. No offense.

Emma said...

None taken, Joe, 'cos what you say is the truth. I'm on a holiday, and she gets snippity at me for watching movies instead of teaching myself Chinese. wtf? ICK.

J.D. said...

LOL, that's a bit heinous.

But maybe you could compromise and just watch Chinese movies?

LOL. the man speaks sense.

if it's obscure you want, swedish music always does the trick. you may enjoy shout out louds, jens lekman, jonna lee, laakso, mando diao, the sounds, et al.; you might even throw in a bit of (international) noise conspiracy to go with the communist theme. if obscurity is not an issue, i must reiterate that listening to the clash, interpol, the replacements, the specials, maximo park, or the kinks on repeat never did anyone wrong (i think).

don't get sucked into the whole asian boy band and/or korean rap thing. always a risk when travelling in asia.

Methinks you need some Australian influences (if you can find them!) I love Clare Bowditch and the Feeding Set, Missy Higgins, Ben Lee, the Waifs and the Veronicas if you're looking for something resembling pop.

Enjoy =)
